ARISE L’Afrique-À-Porter: Jewel By Lisa

Lisa Folawiyo’s label Jewel By Lisa really understands ready-to-wear. From embellished structured jackets to harem tweed pants, the collection was made for the Africhic socialite in London or New York. This season, JBL was inspired by the idea of an African winter and wanted to show that there can be more done with the African fabric by incorporating thicker wool textures. Initial feedback from members of the French press was that her collection was intricate and pretty – the use of ankara was a definite talking point with members of the French press expressing fascination by the use of embellishments to accentuate the ankara. We expect a huge demand for JBL’s jewel encrusted tights by African fashionistas next season.

Speedy Exhibition at Louis Vuitton akati, Philipppines

Created in the 1920's, the Keepall was the forerunner of modern travel bags. Made in Monogram canvas, its suppleness made it easy to be folded and stored at the bottom of the suitcase. A multi-use travel bag, it became a symbol of a new way to travel.

Following the success of the Keepall in the 1930, Louis Vuitton launched a smaller version aimed to be a handbag for travel: the Speedy. Its original name, Express, was changed to Speedy, a reference to the development of modern means of transportation and to an always faster way of living.

Its simple lines and sober chic look immediately appealed to the most fashion-conscious customers, starting the trend of carry-all city bags.

In 1965, Audrey Hepburn, a great customer of Louis Vuitton, asked Henri-Louis Vuitton to create a smaller version of the Speedy as a Special Order. This is how the Speedy 25 was born.
